Eventually, the eagle figured out that it couldn't win this battle so it did the next best thing: escape.

The bird tucked its wings in, accelerated towards the ground, and opened them up at the last minute just before crashing into it. A gust of wind blew over us as its massive wings slowed its descent. Unfortunately, Rex was pulled off along with it.

The bird slammed into the ground with its wings spread, absorbing the impact. Rex, not wanting to take his chances, jumped off.

He was safe. For now. But it didn't matter anymore because the eagle took flight.

"Run for the trees," I commanded. "Don't look back!"

We scattered across the clearing. The bird flapped its wings while rising high up into the air, but then it angled itself downward as it spotted me running away.

"Shit!" I swore as I picked up speed. I hadn't even reached the edge yet.

A flash of fire and a high-pitched scream made me pause and turn around.

The bird, now engulfed in flames, fell to the ground. I stared at the sight dumbly until someone slapped me on the shoulder.

It was Rex.

He was back to normal.

But his clothes were tattered. His hair was unkempt. And he looked angry as hell. He was also carrying a flaming sword, which was cool.

The eagle crashed to the ground and I heard a thumping sound echo in the distance. The party's heads all swiveled towards the direction of the sound, but I kept my focus on Rex.

"How the hell did you get rid of your status condition?" I whispered to him.

"I figured if Mathius' soul came from a crow, then maybe the eagle's would too."

I didn't ask whether he'd tried first with Sarah's soul because I just wanted to know the results. "So...anything useful?" I asked him.

He frowned. "Yeah, nothing good. You don't want to see what I can do with a bird."

The eagle spread its wings, causing a gust of air to blow dust up into our faces. We instinctively turned away, but when we looked back, it was gone.

I looked around, scanning the night sky.

A blur rushed at me from my blindspot, forcing me to turn and swing my katana on reflex alone.

My blade slammed against a giant beak with a crack! My grip buckled as the momentum threatened to tear my katana out of my hands, but my training kicked in and I followed through. I swung the sword forward to maintain its momentum and redirected it right at the eagle's left wing.

The eagle cried out as my katana dug into the bird's flesh, leaving a nasty gash before tearing itself free from my grip.

You have unlocked a new ability: Swordsmanship Level 3 – The most basic way of using a sword. Your knowledge and skill allow you to attack and defend better. You can now also more efficiently wield two weapons. (Bonus damage +2% per skill level. Bonus Defense +2% per skill level. Bonuses increase during combat.)

That explained the lack of defense bonus. As a result, it had done next to no damage.
